Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said his team had disappointed fans “for many weeks” before an invigorating 3-1 Premier League victory over Chelsea on Saturday.

The Gunners scored their first home league win since October, when goals from Alexandre Lacazette, Granit Xhaka and Bukayo Saka put them up 3-0 before a late Tammy Abraham goal completed the score.

Arsenal had failed to win any of their seven previous league games, losing five of them. Speaking after the game, Arteta said Saturday’s result was one to celebrate, but acknowledged that his team’s lack of wins had frustrated fans.

“The result is the main thing today, we really needed that victory. We have been unlucky and frustrated with our results in the last eight weeks, so this was a great day for us,” Arteta told BBC Sport.

“From the first whistle you could see that the team had the energy and the desire to go out and win the game.

“The spirit before the game was very positive, they really wanted it. I’m happy for the players and the fans. We have disappointed them for many weeks, so it was a good day to give them some joy.

Shaka Hislop believes that Timo Werner’s doubts have become his worst enemy with his recent struggles.

“When we gave away the penalty, I couldn’t believe it, it’s a great game called soccer. It can always surprise you.”

Arteta hoped the match would reverse Arsenal’s fortunes this season.

“There is nothing better than winning a London derby against Chelsea on Boxing Day. Hopefully this is a turning point. I know they can play at this level. We know how good Chelsea are, but the great moments of the game in we were the best team, “he said.

“Injuries, Covid, playing with 10 men … you start to think what we need to win a game.

“It’s good to give something back to the fans because I imagine they were really disappointed. We started well and we were dominant. That gives the team confidence.

“Let’s keep going. We still have great things to improve.”
