The 32-year-old stood out during the first months of Arteta’s tenure, but has been in exile since the Premier League resumed in June and has not appeared at all for the club this season.
In his absence, Arsenal have struggled to unlock rival defenses and appear to be clamoring for the creative qualities that the former Real Madrid star possesses in abundance.
The Gunners have scored just 10 goals in their 11 top-flight games so far this season, while captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has not found the back of the net since open play since the opening day of the campaign.
It seems unlikely that, despite a streak of form that has seen Arsenal fall to 15th place in the table, Ozil will play for the club again, much to Wenger’s sadness.
“It wasn’t hard to handle,” Wenger told ESPN. Offside podcast.
“He was a guy who had a special quality as a creative player and needed to have fun. He’s an artist and these guys are a little more sensitive.
“They need support and an environment that encourages them to do their best.
You have two ways of seeing a soccer team. You get everyone to do the same. The same intensity of work, the same defensive work or you find a compromise.
“You have a more creative player on the team who can do less defensive work, but you build a team around him that can make up for these shortcomings.
That’s what you have to think about.
