Arsenal must ‘find a way’ to bring Mesut Ozil back to the team, says Arsene Wenger, calling the shocking relegation a ‘waste’

ARSENE WENGER has urged Arsenal to re-engage Mesut Ozil as he claimed the German is wasting his career.

The 31-year-old has not appeared for the club since a 1-0 win against West Ham in March, and the player has yet to be included in a team of the matchday this season.

Ozil, who was paid a £ 8 million loyalty bonus in September, is in the final year of his contract in the Emirates.

It has been claimed that the Gunners are set to reopen talks to break his £ 350,000-a-week contract to get him off the salary bill in January.

But Wenger has insisted that Arsenal must try to find a way to make him play, as he is too good a player to be out of the team.

When asked by the BBC what he thinks of Ozil’s career today, he said: “I feel like it’s a waste for him.

“In the first place because it is in the years in which a player of his talent can produce more.

“And it is a waste for the club also because it is a super talent, a creative talent that in the last third can create that killer pass.

“The way football is going right now is a quick counter, quick transitions and everyone plays the same.

“He has fired players like Ozil. Although let’s not forget who this guy is. A world champion who has played for Real Madrid.

“He’s been the assist turntable, so you have to find a way to get him involved again.”

Ozil, who recently declared that he would pay the salary of the Gunnersaurus mascot, has been excluded from the club’s Europa League squad.

Despite constantly overlooking Ozil, Wenger insists that Arsenal’s future is bright under Mikel Arteta.

Wenger added: “He has the ingredients to be a very good coach, a superior coach, but a lot of my former players had these ingredients.

“We have to give them time, let them do their job the way they want.

He is intelligent, has a great passion and a strong character. And I think he’s surrounding himself with the right people. ”
