Army confirms that a soldier who was restricted to a barracks fell and died

KUALA LUMPUR: A soldier who was restricted to his rooms for being absent without permission (Awol) died after falling from the third floor of a building in the Kem Majidee of the Royal Malay Regiment, Batu Pahat.

The army in a statement on Tuesday (September 8) confirmed the incident involving Pbt Abdul Aziz Aznam on August 28.

“The deceased reported to the guard station around 6 pm after being absent without permission and was restricted to his accommodation in Company A, while he waited for the commanding officer to read the documentation and charges.

“The team is currently operating in Sabah until October 2020.

“At around 11:50 p.m., the soldier was found to have fallen from the third floor of the rooms and suffered head injuries,” the statement read.

He added that the soldier was rushed to Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital in Batu Pahat for treatment.

“After the incident, the 10th Battalion team filed a police report at around 9.53am on August 29 at the Batu Pahat Police Station.

“The soldier’s family submitted a report on September 1 in Ipoh, claiming that he had been tortured prior to the incident.

“The soldier was pronounced dead around 2 pm on September 6 and an autopsy performed by a specialist doctor from Sultanah Aminah Hospital, Johor Baru, the following day found no other physical injuries that could be related to the crime or the torture, “he said.

The statement added that forensic pathologists and police had visited the scene of the incident on September 7 to verify that the autopsy results were consistent with the situation at the scene.

“The military has always been transparent and will continue to cooperate and assist the police in their investigations.

“We completely leave the investigations to the authorities and we will provide full cooperation to the police to expedite the investigations,” he said, adding that the army would not compromise against any of its officers or personnel if they were involved in any acts contrary to the law.
