PETALING JAYA: The head of the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) General Affendi Buang says they are ready for any situation and threat amid reports that large numbers of foreigners are seeking to enter Sabah to disrupt the elections.
This comes after Sabah Police Chief Hazani Ghazali said they received intelligence about the disruption by foreigners from a neighboring country.
“We have received information that immigrants from a neighboring country will come to Sabah in large numbers to create riots. We have to thwart this so that the elections run smoothly and public order and security can be maintained, ”Hazani said at a press conference in Kota Kinabalu yesterday.
In a statement, Affendi said that the “Ops Benteng” of the National Task Force, which is led by the army, will ensure that the country’s maritime and land borders are secure.
“With the participation and cooperation of staff and assets from all security and enforcement agencies, (Ops Benteng) is conducted in an organized manner and focuses on security in Sabah to ensure that the electoral process is smooth,” he said. .
He said people are encouraged to act as the “eyes and ears” of the security forces, as national security is the responsibility of all parties.
The public, especially Sabaha residents, are encouraged to report any information about trespassing by undocumented immigrants or cross-border crimes to the National Task Force Operations Center at 011-6251 1223.
Sabah will go to the polls on Saturday. Early voting for police and military personnel and their spouses begins today.
