THE The government is prepared to revise existing laws, including the Official Secrets Act (OSA) to improve them, Minister of the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan (pix) said.

The government always conducts reviews of the laws to ensure that the improvements benefit the people and the administration, he said.

“Each act of Parliament has its objectives set and the government is willing to listen to other points of view and amend any law to improve it.

“We are also ready to examine the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010 (Law 711),” he said to a question from R. Sivarasa (PH-Sungai Buloh).

Sivarasa had asked whether the government had any plans to improve Law 711 by emulating the steps taken by companies listed in Bursa Malaysia to establish an internal whistle-blowing system.

He said that Law 711 was passed in 2010 to combat corruption and misconduct in the public and other sectors.

He said the Law also facilitates the exposure of illegal activities, adding that whistleblowers must act in good faith since, according to Law 711, they will be granted protection.

“The information provided by them, as well as their identities, addresses and occupations will be confidential. They will also have immunity from any civil or criminal action ”.

In return, he said that a whistleblower must cooperate and act within the provisions of the Act in order to be afforded protection under the law. “

The Act also allows enforcement agencies to conduct investigations, he said.
