PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeals set March 5 to hear Anwar Ibrahim’s appeal against a High Court decision that overturned his claim related to his conviction for sodomizing a former aide.

Anwar’s attorney, J Leela, said the new date was set after attorney Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, who was allowed to intervene in this case, successfully requested an adjournment pending the outcome of a related matter before the Court. Federal.

“Anwar’s appeal was supposed to be heard two days ago (Nov. 18), but Shafee wanted his request regarding the refusal to remove an affidavit made by a former attorney general’s special duties officer to be heard first,” he said. to FMT after case administration today.

The superior court has scheduled to hear Shafee’s authorization to appeal the request on January 21.

On November 8, 2017, the High Court rejected Anwar’s initial subpoena on the grounds that the case had no cause for action and was an abuse of judicial process.

Anwar said the Appeals Court’s decision in 2014 to convict him of sodomizing Saiful Bukhari Azlan was carried out unconstitutionally.

He claimed that Shafee had received RM9.5 million from Najib Razak to lead the prosecution team in the Court of Appeal and Federal Court, as of 2013.

In the 2012 Sodomy 2 trial in High Court, Judge Mohamad Zabidin Diah found Anwar not guilty.

The Court of Appeal annulled the acquittal and sentenced him to five years in prison.

On February 10, 2015, the Federal Court confirmed the conviction and the prison sentence. However, Anwar received full forgiveness from Yang di-Pertuan Agong on May 16, 2018.

In early September 2018, Siti Rahayu Mohd Mumazaini, who served under former Attorney General Tommy Thomas, filed the affidavit to support Anwar’s appeal (now in the Court of Appeal) to reactivate his lawsuit filed against the government.

Siti Rahayu said the checks were deposited into Shafee’s CIMB Bank account on September 13, 2013 and February 17, 2014.

On November 29, 2018, the Court of Appeal dismissed Shafee’s request to remove Siti Rahayu’s affidavit and question her.

However, the appeals court allowed Shafee to intervene in Anwar’s appeal regarding his civil action against the government for the sodomy conviction.
