PETALING JAYA: Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has welcomed Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s decision against a government proposal to declare a state of emergency, describing it as a “historic” moment.
“It is a position based on the spirit of the Federal Constitution and that shows understanding of the concerns and voices of the people,” he said.
He pointed out that political leaders and members of civil society, academic personalities and the media had spoken out against the proposal, considering it contrary to the democratic spirit.
Anwar, who is chairman of PKR, said that he took note of the King’s advice against politicking and said that his party’s MPs will ensure that plans to deal with the Covid-19 crisis, unemployment, poverty and the economic growth can be implemented effectively.
He said that political figures and parliamentarians must assume their responsibilities in the spirit of the constitution and accountability to the people and balance the various demands related to justice, reject corruption and limit any element of abuse of power.
The royal council against politicking came amid weeks of speculation about measures to overthrow the government of Muhyiddin Yassin. Last month, Anwar had stated that he had sufficient support among parliamentarians to form a new government and had presented his case to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong earlier this month.
It has also been speculated that parliamentarians could reject the 2021 federal budget that will be presented on November 6. A vote against the budget would bring down the Muhyiddin government.
