KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stated that he has the support of more than 120 MPs in his bid to become prime minister and form the next government.
“There are more than 120. But because the Yang di-Pertuan Agong will summon the party leaders, therefore, it is rational for us to be patient and give the King room to decide,” he said during a press conference at the Hotel Le Meridien. .
Anwar is also urging all quarters to give the King room to carry out his constitutional duties, as well as his discretion on the matter.
“Therefore, today (Tuesday) is not about winning or losing, but about defending a developed and fair country to face the Covid-19 pandemic and also stimulate economic development,” he said.
Anwar said that the documents presented to the King on Tuesday (October 13) morning were legal statements and documents from the party leaders.
He also expressed gratitude and appreciation to the King for granting him an audience, saying that it allows him to explain and present the relevant documents to the King himself.
“It is very clear that we have registered a formidable and convincing majority in Parliament. I would appeal to Malaysians to exercise patience and wisdom, and allow the King to exercise his discretion based on the spirit of the Constitution, ”Anwar said.
He also said that as Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has lost his majority as prime minister, it would be appropriate for him to resign.
Anwar then added that the King has assured him that the spirit of the Constitution will be upheld on this matter.
“I also reiterated the fact that you have the discretion and should be given adequate time to study and digest the papers, documents and also to consult other party leaders. I am not in a position to decide for the King, ”Anwar said.
He also dismissed allegations that he had made deals with Umno MPs who are currently facing judicial charges, while emphasizing that the new government would be inclusive and there will be no political revenge against anyone.
“It is important to appreciate that I have already made it very clear that we are committed to institutional reforms, judicial independence and the rule of law. (There is) no question of closing deals with individuals as certain sectors allege. It is completely irrelevant and irresponsible. “
Pressed further on the same question, Anwar said he simply assured MPs facing court charges that there will be no political revenge.
“But they must accept due process and the rule of law, as well as an independent judiciary. There is no malicious prosecution as alleged, ”Anwar said.
