KOTA KINABALU: PKR Chairman Anwar Ibrahim met with Sabah Party Chief Christina Liew for a discussion, less than a week after former Warisan Prime Minister and Chairman Shafie Apdal called for a change in the opposition leadership.

Shafie Apdal had called for a generalized change in the leadership of the national opposition, which he described as disunited and aimless.

In a statement, Liew, who is also the head of Sabah Pakatan Harapan, said that among the issues discussed were “foreseeable changes in the political landscape in Malaysia and preparations for the 15th general election.”

“The current political situation is quite fluid. However, the country is not likely to hold new parliamentary elections anytime soon, as we do not want to compromise the safety and general well-being of the people (during the Covid-19 pandemic), ”he said.

The Tawau deputy did not elaborate on the points of the discussions. Also at the meeting, held after today’s parliamentary session, was PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil.

On Saturday, Shafie had claimed that the opposition would fail at GE15 if the same old leadership remained in command. This sparked a backlash from Sabah PKR leaders who did not take the comments very kindly, perceived as directed at Anwar.

The state’s youth chief, Raymond Ahuar, said Pakatan Harapan’s leadership remained strong, claiming that parties such as Warisan and Pejuang were weakening the opposition by not supporting the coalition’s efforts in parliament.

Sabah PKR chief information officer Razeef Rakimin also responded, saying that Warisan should renew his leadership before GE15 if he did not want to fail in the general election.

Sabah DAP, on the other hand, has distanced itself from the change of leadership with its acting boss Frankie Poon only saying that whoever was in the opposition federal lineup should be able to help Sabah’s cause.
