PETALING JAYA: Dr. Mahathir Mohamad stated today that opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim was “cold and critical” of him when he was prime minister in the previous Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration.
Mahathir said that despite obtaining royal forgiveness from Anwar for his past offenses, the PKR president visited everyone but not him, apparently to show gratitude.
He added that Anwar also refused to visit him after the PKR president was released from prison.
In an interview with the Malaysia Gazette, he said that Anwar had also become “critical” of him over time, which made him think twice about appointing him as cabinet minister.
“If I left a cabinet minister and appointed him (Anwar), I would have to think, what is the benefit?”
“Of course, I promised to appoint him as prime minister, but we must remember, so that we can appoint someone to be prime minister, only Parliament can decide who is qualified to be,” he told the news portal.
Mahathir had previously promised an eventual handover of the prime minister post after a few years to Anwar as part of a PH consensus ahead of the 2018 elections.
Meanwhile, Mahathir said that Anwar’s recent announcement that he had majority support in Parliament was also questionable, as a similar earlier event never materialized.
“We knew that he had never had a majority before. This time, I don’t know. If it’s true, then Muhyiddin (Yassin) has fallen, ”he said.
Mahathir went on to say that the current Prime Minister Muhyiddin did not have strong support in Parliament.
“He (Muhyiddin) only has two deputies in support (by majority). If we say that the two deputies have a stomachache, then he has neither. “
