KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim claims to have a large majority to form the next government.

At a press conference on Wednesday (September 23), the PKR president claimed that he has the support to form the next government, but did not reveal the figures.

“In conclusion, we have a strong and formidable majority.

“We are not talking about four or five (majority), we are talking about much more than that,” he said.

When asked if he had about two-thirds of support, Anwar briefly said yes.

Also present were Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and PKR Secretary General Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution.

Anwar said he was supposed to meet with Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah on Tuesday, but it was postponed because the King was being treated at the National Heart Institute.

Anwar, however, said he prayed for the Agong’s speedy recovery through a phone conversation Tuesday night.

“With clear and unchallenged support and a majority behind me, the government headed by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has fallen.

“I will meet with Yang di-Pertuan Agong when he regains his health and provide more information to the public about what will happen next,” Anwar said.

He said he will provide more details once he has had an audience with the King, as that is the most respectful.

Anwar said he has the support of MPs from various parties, including those from Perikatan Nasional.

When asked if Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad will join the support, Anwar said: “Not yet, you can decide later.”

Anwar also ruled out that the announcement is not a move to form a government through the back door.

“This government is for the mandate and the support. Those who decided to join will respect good governance, the fight against corruption, the rule of law, including all races and religions.

“That is the very clear position on which I am not willing to compromise.

“I am happy to say that those who are with me have decided and have strong support (for the principles),” he said.

Anwar also said that the “traitors” who left PKR “were not on the list.”

Full statement from Anwar Ibrahim

I would like to thank the media for joining us today on short notice.

The people of Malaysia deserve leadership that can navigate effectively during these turbulent times. Instead, we have an unstable government whose inability to handle the crisis is leading the country into economic recession and growing racial tension.

We have not seen him mobilize all the resources and capacities of the country to face the crisis head-on. What has happened, instead, is that the government has been busy distributing positions, appointments and contracts to hold on to an extremely slim and thin majority in Parliament.

It is difficult for us to know what the 70 ministers are doing. We have never been informed about the deliberations taking place in the Cabinet. So far, seven months after taking office during an unprecedented national and international crisis, the Prime Minister has not held a single press conference after his regular Cabinet meeting.

Several parliamentarians from various parties approached me and expressed their deep dissatisfaction with the current leadership. They recognize that the country must have strong, stable and responsible leadership to handle the crisis and do so with compassion and concern for the plight of all the people struggling in this pandemic economy. They have expressed their support for me to take over the government now.

I have received convincing support from Members of Parliament to introduce His Majesty the Yang Dipertuan Agong. I want to say here that the majority of the Members who support me are Malays and Muslims.

I would like to mention that I was granted an audience to meet His Majesty Yang di-Pertuan Agong yesterday, Tuesday, September 21 at 11:00 a.m. The meeting was postponed because he was being treated at the National Heart Institute.

However, through a telephone conversation on Tuesday night, I prayed for his speedy recovery and health.

With clear and indisputable support and a majority behind me, the government led by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has fallen. I will meet with Yang di-Pertuan Agong when he regains his health and will provide more information to the public about what will happen next.

This government will represent all people, with a Malay-Bumiputra majority and a fair representation of all races in this country. We are committed to upholding the principles of the constitution that recognizes the position of Islam, the sovereignty of the Malaysian rulers, and defending the position of the Malay language as the official language and the special position of Malays and Bumiputra, as well as giving security to defend the rights of all races.

Finally, I would like to say to all Malaysians: I promise to form a government with integrity and commitment to address the crisis the country is going through, end corruption and fight for the well-being of the people. Insha’Allah I will keep my promise to make Malaysia a prosperous, peaceful and just country for all its people.

Thank you.

ANWAR IBRAHIM
