KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim claims he has a “strong and formidable majority” to form a new federal government.

The deputy and president of PKR from Port Dickson, refusing to reveal details, said that he would like to have an audience with Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah first.

“In conclusion, we have a strong and formidable majority. We are not talking (a majority of four, five or six) … we are talking about much more than that, ”he said yesterday at a packed press conference at a hotel here.

When asked if he had a two-thirds majority support, Anwar replied, “Close.”

Also present were his wife Datuk Seri, Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, the PKR general secretary, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, and the party’s communications director, Fahmi Fadzil.

“With clear and unquestionable support and the majority behind me, the government headed by (Prime Minister) Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has fallen,” Anwar said as his supporters cheered.

He claimed to have the support of parliamentarians from various parties, including Perikatan Nasional.

When asked if Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad would join in providing support, Anwar said: “Not yet, you can decide later.”

He said his announcement was not an attempt to “form a back door government.”

“This government has the mandate and the support. Those who decide to join will respect good governance, the fight against corruption, the rule of law (and be) inclusive of all races and religions.

“That is a very clear position in which I am not willing to compromise. I am happy to say that those who are with me have decided and have strong support (of the principles), ”he said, adding that traitors who left PKR“ are not on the list ”.

Anwar also said that he was willing to consider a suitable role for Muhyiddin.

“I invite you to cooperate. I personally have no problems with him. I am willing to work with him if he can cooperate and facilitate a peaceful and orderly transition of power, ”he said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mahathir said that he would “wait and see” what came of Anwar’s claim.

Addressing the Nutanix Asean Virtual CIO Summit via Zoom yesterday, the former prime minister said this was not the first time that the PKR chairman claimed to have majority support in Parliament.

“We will have to wait and see if this is another episode of making claims that cannot be substantiated,” said The Edge Singapore.

In 2008, Anwar similarly claimed that he had enough support to take over the Federal Government after the political tsunami of the general elections held that year. The coup did not happen.
