KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): The government agreed to build a bridge connecting Labuan to the mainland in Sabah through a private finance initiative (PFI), says Federal Territories Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa (Photo).

He said his ministry and the Ministry of Works were in the process of finalizing the terms of reference for the “Request for Proposal” (RFP) process to build the bridge.

“The proposed bridge construction project will be implemented through the collaboration and privatization of the public-private sector or PFI.

“This cooperation can ensure a smooth and transparent implementation of the project through competitive tenders,” he said in response to Datuk Rozman Isli (Warisan-Labuan), who at the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday (Nov 18) asked whether the financing of the bridge it would be borne by the government or PFI.

Annuar said that the public-private partnership project could help develop the economy through private investment and reduce the burden on the government, as well as offer the best value to the government.

Annuar said the ministry expected interested companies to submit RFP terms for the bridge’s construction before the end of this year.

“Then it will take six to eight months to complete the RFP documents in detail to enable the bidding.

“By September 2021, the offers will be evaluated and it is expected that we can finalize in October which method will be used and the company chosen to build the bridge,” he said. – Bernama
