KUALA LUMPUR: Minister of Federal Territories Tan Sri Annuar Musa (Photo) says it will oppose any plan to impose additional charges for purchases made on online platforms.
“Service charge for online transaction? No matter how much, the government has never made such a decision … it is a matter of policy. If it is the Cabinet, I will surely object,” Annuar tweeted on Tuesday (September 8) .
This was in response to Deputy Minister of Communications and Multimedia, Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin, who said that an “additional charge” of 20 sen would be imposed on all transactions above 200 ringgit on online platforms. This would increase to 40 sen for transactions over RM1,000.
He said this would be a way to raise money for a special fund to help the B40 group, which would also be used to help improve communications infrastructure in rural areas.
“We are discussing the plan that will be presented (in Parliament) to find alternative resources that do not pose a burden to people, and we also want to give them the best services.”
“This will be like a service charge, and if the purchase exceeds RM1,000, the additional charge will be 40 sen,” he told reporters after attending the Kelantan-level Merdeka @ Komuniti program in Pengkalan Petah here on Tuesday. (September 8th). .
At the beginning of his speech, Zahidi said that the government plans to impose an additional charge for purchases made through e-commerce platforms such as Lazada and Shopee.
