The Persatuan Penyelamat Haiwan Terbiar Furrykids Safehaven animal shelter is calling for help after 54 dogs, including a newborn puppy, drowned in flash floods that hit the Seremban-based home.

“Floods hit our shelter early in the morning of November 4. The floodwaters rose rapidly and the current was strong. The water level reached the top of the shelter door, which is over five feet,” Furrykids said in a post today.

He posted an aerial photograph of the Kuala Sawah and Rantau area, which was affected by the floods from the Sungai Linggi.

The animal shelter, which was established in December 2017, rescues stray dogs in Seremban and currently houses around 1,750.

Sathiavany Madhavan, the home secretary, said Called that the water began to rise in the shelter at 3.30 am after a downpour.

“Earlier today, our worker staying at the shelter informed us that it was flooding and that the water level had risen much more than 4 feet in 30 minutes.

“We ordered him and our six other workers to release the dogs from the cages because we did not have enough staff to get the cages to safety,” he said.

Sathiavany said many of the dogs managed to climb onto the roof of the shelter and waited there, but many others panicked and were swept away by the rushing waters.

“It is believed that many dogs were swept into the nearby river,” he added.

Furrykids also reported damage to food stocks and other supplies.

He hopes to raise RM350,000 to build a better shelter at another rented location in Kuala Sawah, Seremban, which is already under construction.

“However, due to this incident, we have asked the contractor to expedite the work so that at least the dogs can move there first. Now, we fear that the cost has skyrocketed by another RM 100,000, ”Sathiavany said.

The flood is said to have affected 2,000 victims from 15 areas, including Seremban and Rembau districts, with a total of 77 flood victims from 16 families transferred to evacuation centers at 4 p.m.

The affected areas include Kampung Datuk Mansor, Taman Happy and Taman Mok Sum, Kampung Bukit Chedang, Kampung Baru Block C Ampangan, Kampung Batu 3, Taman Angsa Mas, Kampung Siliau, Kampung Kuala Sawah, Kampung Sega Hilir, Kampung Pasir, and Kampung Lingsum.
