Photographs of the burning complex have gone viral on social media and many lament the damage to the island’s beautiful hotel.

PETALING JAYA: With tourists already leaving Langkawi due to the motion control order (MCO) and the emergency, the Andaman Resort on the island suffered a major impact: a part of the hotel was destroyed in a fire.

Social media users were surprised to see videos of the burning complex today.

The fire reportedly started last night and was only brought under control this afternoon. The complex’s kitchen is believed to have been completely destroyed with further unconfirmed damage.

One social media user, Chris Almazan, said he was supposed to celebrate his birthday at the resort, but hadn’t gone there due to the inter-state travel ban under the MCO.

“Despite all the things going on around me, I should be grateful,” he said.

Another user, Ramakrishnan CM, was incredulous at the news of the fire at the beautiful resort.

“Unreal, we were there a while ago.” he said. “Praying for the safety and sustenance of all the extremely nice and friendly staff there.”

Bernama reported that a building at the five-star complex at Jalan Teluk Datai here was destroyed after catching fire twice in 10 hours.

A spokesman for the Kedah Fire and Rescue Department said the fire first broke out at 4:40 p.m. yesterday before reoccurring after midnight at the same location.

He said the fire was stoked by strong winds and spread rapidly to engulf almost the entire block of the building.

He said firefighters had to shoot torrents of water from a waterboat in the south and north wings that extended about 100 feet.

Resort management has assured the FMT that a statement will be made to the media today about the incident.
