* SPOILER ALERT * In today’s issue of Anatomy of a K-drama Scene, we do a silent introspection on why Kim Seon-ho kept apologizing to Kim Hae-sook; after learning of his illness, in the emotional sequence of Start-Up.

While intense curiosity about who Seo Dal-mi (Suzy) chooses between Nam Do-san (Nam Joo-hyuk) and Han Ji-pyeong (Kim Seon-ho) has sparked a lot of debate on Twitter among DoDal senders and JiDal, if there is one thing almost most Start up fans can collectively agree; Ji-pyeong and halmeoni’s (Kim Hae-sook) relationship surpassed everything else.

* SPOILER ALERT * In today’s issue of Anatomy of a K-drama scene, we have a moment of quiet introspection in a tear-jerk. Start up sequence between Ji-pyeong and halmeoni after the former finds out that Ms. Choi is going blind due to illness. After silently noticing that she was using Samsan Tech’s NoonGil app to calculate how much she earned that day at her corn dog shop, Ji-pyeong is seen with a look of remorse on her face. Referring to Ji-pyeong as her good boy, Halmeoni is shocked to see him beaten up (due to his fight with Do-san).

Ji-pyeong doesn’t reveal what exactly happened and lies that it was her fault. As he yells at whoever has hit Ji-pyeong and tells him in a cute way that he has never met anyone as good as him, the latter fidgets, rejects Halmeoni’s hands and exclaims, “No, I am not. No I am a good Miss Choi, you completely misjudged me. I am an idiot who hurts other people with harsh words. I pretend to be the smartest in the world, but actually I am an idiot who knows nothing. I am not a good boy. ” Finally breaking up, a nervous halmeoni walks past Ji-pyeong’s walls and asks him what’s wrong.

A heartbroken Ji-pyeong hugs Halmeoni tightly and continues to apologize profusely while Ms. Choi is left in shock. One couldn’t help trying to figure out why Ji-pyeong was apologizing. One example is because of how harsh he had been on NoonGil, claiming it was not a profitable business and disapproving of the Yeong-sil AI, which was important to Samsan Tech’s useful app. The fact that Do-san created the app for Halmeoni’s illness hit Ji-pyeong hard as he feels he owes her for how Halmeoni took care of him when he was at his lowest ebb. It’s also the fact that halmeoni is the closest thing Ji-pyeong has to a royal family.

Another example could also be his guilt for the death of Kim Yong-san’s older brother (Kim Do-wan) and how he may have played a considerable role in it. Although Yoon Seon-hak (Seo Yi-sook) assures him that he was not wrong in giving his honest criticism, the guilt refuses to fade for a long time.

There is also Dal-mi’s factoring and his feelings for her. Upon learning how she got fired from Samsan Tech, Dal-mi teary eyed asks for Ji-pyeong’s honest opinion, which he gives albeit too harshly. Since he collapses in front of halmeoni, we see Ji-pyeong even apologizing to Dal-mi for his actions. This prompts Dal-mi to lecture her, as she says she shouldn’t feel sorry because she was doing the right thing.

There are also parallels to a scene from Ep 1 between a young Ji-pyeong and halmeoni, who plays an important role in the sequence from Ep 12. As Ji-pyeong waits for her bus to Seoul after her fight with Halmeoni over the money from the bank account, Halmeoni comes to say goodbye to him and even buys him new shoes. “Promise me. If you are successful, don’t call me. Don’t call me if you get rich and get married. Don’t call me if you’re happy. I don’t want to feel jealous. But call me … if you’re going through a rough patch. see me if it’s raining and you have nowhere to go like before. Don’t stay alone in the rain. You know where to find the keys, “halmeoni says an excited Ji-pyeong.

An adult Ji-pyeong, who still finds it difficult to be more emotionally open, tends to break down alone in front of halmeoni. We see this happen even in episode 9 when Ji-pyeong has his epiphany moment delayed and reveals to halmeoni that he has feelings for Dal-mi and is also angry that he can’t do anything about it. As the rain falls on him, it is halmeoni who provides a literal and metaphorical umbrella for her good boy.
