PETALING JAYA: Enhanced Motion Control Order (EMCO) imposed at Alor Star Prison has been extended for another 14 days until November 1.

The EMCO, implemented on October 5, was scheduled to end yesterday, but the high number of Covid-19 cases forced the government to extend the order.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that as of Saturday, a total of 1,178 people had tested positive for the virus.

They are made up of 1,137 prisoners and 41 assistants, he said yesterday at a press conference.

Meanwhile, violations of standard operating procedures (SOPs) continued. On Saturday, a total of 661 people were arrested for disobeying the SOP.

Ismail Sabri said 27 of the detainees were placed in pre-trial detention, two offered bail and the remaining 632 issued precincts.

The crimes committed were not wearing masks, ignoring social distancing, violating the EMCO and visiting entertainment centers.

Business owners who did not provide equipment for the contact tracing record were also caught.

Ismail Sabri said the arrests were made during an inspection of 15,106 stores, including supermarkets, restaurants, factories, markets, places of worship and entertainment areas.

In a separate operation, dubbed “Ops Benteng”, 72 illegal immigrants were picked up and 35 ground vehicles were seized.

He said that since the implementation of Ops Benteng in May, a total of 497 illegal immigrants and 28 ship captains had been arrested in Sarawak alone.
