PETALING JAYA: A woman of Malay descent has made history by becoming the youngest woman of color to become mayor of California.
Jocelyn Yow, 25, has a Malaysian father who went to study in the United States in the 1980s and a Vietnamese mother from a refugee family who moved to the United States in the 1980s.
The family moved to Malaysia in 1996 when his paternal grandfather in Alor Setar, Kedah, was diagnosed with cancer.
“I ended up spending more than 10 years there, which allowed me to learn more about our history, heritage and family culture,” he said in an Instagram post. “I am honored to be the daughter of my parents and I am proud to be a Malay-Vietnamese-Chinese-American,” she said.
Yow is the mother of a six-month-old baby and is pursuing a master’s degree in government. She was elected to the Eastvale City Council in 2018 and also served as interim mayor. She was elected mayor in the US elections in November.
He had also served as an assistant to the United States House of Representatives and also became a district representative in the California Senate.
She said the first thing on her agenda after taking office as mayor this week is to create the city’s first library, in addition to increasing the representation of people of color in the Californian city.
