PETALING JAYA: Despite being offered the opportunity to defer payments, about 28% of borrowers from the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) are still repaying their loans.

The corporation said that, as of October this year, more than 422,600 borrowers have chosen to continue paying their student loans.

He said that a total of RM595.25 thousand has been collected so far, and RM103.03 thousand in October.

This is an increase of almost 174% compared to April 2020, when RM 37.65 thousand was collected.

“This shows that PTPTN borrowers are still trying to repay their loans despite being in a difficult situation due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Such actions should be followed by other borrowers who are able to repay their loans and are not affected by the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said in a statement on Friday (November 20).

PTPTN said these borrowers who are still paying off their loans deserve to be commended as they do not need to repay due to the extended deferral that Higher Education Minister Datuk Dr. Noraini Ahmad announced on August 4.

The extension was for three months from October 1 to December 31.

Earlier, on March 23, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced a six-month PTPTN loan deferral from March to September to help those facing financial problems due to the pandemic.

From March to December, around 1.5 million borrowers have benefited from the announcements with an estimated RM1.13 billion in deferred loan repayments.
