PETALING JAYA: All schools in Sabah will be closed for two weeks, starting on October 10, following an increase in Covid-19 cases in the state, says the Ministry of Education.

The Ministry said that since Covid-19 cases in Sabah continue to show an increase, the National Security Council (MKN) on the management of the Covid-19 pandemic chaired by the Prime Minister on Friday (October 9), has agreed to the need for school closings across the state.

As such, the Ministry said that all schools in Sabah will be closed from October 10 to 25.

Currently, all schools located in Sabah’s red zones are closed.

The Ministry said that students from boarding schools located in Sabah’s red-light districts must stay in their dormitories.

He added that students in boarding schools in green areas, but who have family homes in red areas, must also stay in their dormitories.

“The school administration will manage the safety and well-being of those students,” he said in a statement Friday.

Furthermore, since Covid-19 cases have also been detected in Sekolah Kebangsaan Presint 8 (1) in Putrajaya and Sekolah Kebangsaan Bangsar, the Ministry said that both schools were also ordered to close from 9 to 16 October.

He noted that this decision will involve 2,978 elementary students, as well as 211 teachers and staff.

“The closure is carried out based on the Infectious Diseases Prevention and Control Act of 1988 (Law 342) to control the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic and guarantee that cleaning, disinfection and contact tracing work can be carried out”, He said.

Meanwhile, the Ministry also said that any school in the country that has registered a positive case of Covid-19 must close for seven days, without having to wait for the risk analysis evaluation by the Ministry of Health, adding that this was To ensure cleanliness, the Ministry of Health can perform disinfection and contact tracing.

“On this issue, schools that have registered positive cases of Covid-19 must follow the school closure guidelines that will be published by the Ministry,” he said.

Since schools were allowed to reopen on June 24, the Ministry said any decision to suspend classes or close schools is based on the directive from the Ministry of Health.

“During this period, if the District Health Office detects a positive case of Covid-19 among students, teachers and school personnel, the Ministry will carry out a comprehensive risk analysis assessment of the infected case.

“Based on the risk analysis, the Ministry of Health, through the District Health Office, will issue a directive on whether to close a class, a floor or an entire building or to close an entire school”, He said.

During the school closure period, the Ministry said the school administration was instructed to ensure that teachers and students do home teaching and learning.

“The home teaching and learning manuals can be downloaded from the Ministry’s website,” he said.
