Alisson says the quality of Thiago Alcantara can make a crucial difference in Liverpool’s bid to achieve the rare feat of defending the Premier League title.
Thiago could make his first start for Jurgen Klopp’s side in Monday’s showdown against Arsenal, after impressing during a 45-minute cameo in last weekend’s win over Chelsea.
The Spanish midfielder’s 75 complete passes broke the record for half a Premier League match, in what was his first appearance for the Reds since his £ 27 million transfer from Bayern Munich.
He came to Anfield with a lot of pedigree, with two Champions League titles, seven Bundesliga titles and two La Liga crowns among the honors he has accumulated over 11 years with Bayern and Barcelona.
And Alisson hopes the 29-year-old will make a big difference in Liverpool’s title hunt this season.
“Thiago is an important arrival for us, not only because he is new blood but because he is superior blood,” Alisson said in an interview with the Mail on Sunday.
“He is a top player who already has a great career in football, a player with energy who still wants to do great things and also a top person who will come here and will not bring us problems but will bring solutions for us and I am very happy we can count on him. “
Liverpool will equal Manchester United’s all-time record of 20 top flight titles if they successfully defend their Premier League crown this season.
But they will have to work hard, as recent history shows that it is notoriously difficult to be crowned English champions in consecutive seasons.
When Manchester City successfully defended their title in 2019, it was the first time a team did so since neighboring United accomplished the feat 10 years earlier.
United managed to defend six of the 13 league crowns they won under Sir Alex Ferguson, while Chelsea also eliminated all rivals to claim back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006.
But Alisson believes that Klopp’s team has the players to make history.
“We have first-rate players here,” said the goalkeeper. “The best people, really good men full of the desire to win and do great things for this club, and the desire to improve is what we need in this team because history says that not many clubs win the title for the second year in a row.
