PETALING JAYA: Calls for a “new alignment” with DAP and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim are intended to divide Umno, warns Barisan Nasional Secretary General Tan Sri Annuar Musa.
He said that some party leaders were using official party platforms to propagate the so-called “jajaran baru” (new lineup), sending the wrong signals to the ground.
“Some (rank and file) misinterpreted the message as coming from the leadership, although it clearly contradicts the party’s policy (against forging ties with DAP and Anwar),” he said in a statement on Sunday (December 27).
He said this in response to attempts by certain leaders who were pushing for a political “realignment” with DAP and Anwar.
Annuar warned that such a move would cause Umno to lose even its strongholds in the next general election.
“Will the commitment to Malaysian unity and solidarity to topple Pakatan Harapan in the name of a new alignment be compromised?” I ask.
Annuar said the DAP should be “proud” to note that some of Umno’s top leaders had become its spokespersons.
“Some travel up and down to justify their narrative of why Umno should accept DAP and Anwar.
“But, in general, the rank and file have expressed reservations against such a move. It is clear that Umno is heading towards a split,” he said.
Annuar said those who supported the party’s decision remained silent.
“Hopefully we don’t fall a second time for the mistakes made by those above,” he said.
Annuar warned that Umno would lose his role in uniting the Malays and that the witness could move elsewhere if he proceeded with this new alignment.
