Liverpool legend John Aldridge has revealed why he believes the signing of Diogo Jota will be a huge benefit for Roberto Firmino at Anfield.
The Portuguese attacker arrived in Merseyside last weekend on a £ 45m move from Wolves, where he scored 62 goals in three seasons.
With Firmino, Mo Salah and Sadio Mane scored 57 goals between them last season, the speedy 23-year-old is seen as a competition from the bench.
However, there are some suggestions that Jota has been brought in to replace Firmino.
The Brazilian have lacked goals, especially at home. It took him 16 months to score a goal at Anfield before scoring against Chelsea in the trophy-lifting game in July.
But Aldridge, who scored 63 goals in four seasons for the Reds, believes that it will help bring out the best in Firmino.
Writing in the Echo of LiverpoolSaid: “Our amazing options look really good now.
“Mo Salah showed the opening weekend [against Leeds United] he’s as hungry as ever. Sadio Mane again showed what it is about at Chelsea.
“I saw that Jamie Carragher has compared him to the great John Barnes and I can certainly see where he comes from.
“Bobby Firmino did very well to create the first goal on Sunday. [against Chelsea] And even though he’s not in his prime yet and seems a bit low-confident, he came to life in the second half around the edge of the box with his little touches and moves.
“That 45 second [minutes] at Chelsea it will do him good, as I think the arrival of Jota will because, as I said last week, knowing that there is now someone on the bench who could potentially take his place should be a good motivating factor to score a few goals. plus.
“Quality support for the attacking force is something that we have said Liverpool need for some time. It’s great to see him in his place now. “
How Jota fits in at Liverpool
Aldridge also explained how he sees Jota fitting in at Liverpool.
He added: “He is fast, his delivery is very good, he can play in various forward positions. It also knows where the bottom of the net is.
“Don’t forget that many of your appearances with the Wolves have come as a backup. That paints a bit of the false picture when it comes to your creative ability.
“It may seem like a lot of money to some people, but Liverpool fans should implicitly trust the manager. Because look at how many decisions you have made.
“If he thinks Jota is worth that, with Ki-Jana Hoever going the other way, it could turn out to be a good deal for Liverpool.”
