MELAKA: Various issues between the hotel sector and Airbnb, including rules and taxes, will be resolved soon, said the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy) Minister Mustapa Mohamed.

He described this as a new opportunity for the tourism industry, especially hotel operators, which are more affected by the Covid-19 pandemic as they are subject to regulations compared to Airbnb operators.

It is also part of the government’s efforts to help revive the tourism sector in movements towards restoring the country’s economy, he added.

Discussions on the subject were ongoing between the Ministry of Tourism, Art and Culture, the Ministry of Housing and Local Government and the state governments, with a committee chaired by the Chief Secretary of the Government, Mohd Zuki Ali, in charge of resolving the problems.

“In business, we have to be fair to everyone. So if one component is subject to various rules while another is not, of course this is not fair, ”Mustapa told reporters after a dinner and discussion with tourism industry stakeholders in Bandar Hilir here last night.

Also present were the Chief Minister of Melaka, Sulaiman Md Ali, the Secretary of State Hasim Hasan and the Chairman of the Committee on Tourism, Heritage and Culture, Jailani Khamis.

In another development, Mustapa said the government was finalizing the 12th Malaysia Plan financial allocations for the states.

Citing Melaka as an example, he said that he is seeking RM100 million for a cable car project and RM25 million for the maintenance of various tourist destinations.
