AirAsia Malaysia begins to fly again, passengers must bring their own masks

AirAsia returns to the skies with domestic flights in Malaysia starting today (April 29), but passengers will need to follow Covid-19’s security measures.

Each passenger must bring their own mask and wear it properly before, during and after the flight, including during check-in and baggage claim. Boarding will be denied to any guest without a mask.

AirAsia’s chief security officer, Captain Ling Liong Tien, said the carrier is stepping up all precautionary measures to ensure safe travel.

“First, it is your responsibility to ensure that you are eligible to travel, whether international or domestic, before booking a flight.

“We kindly ask you to observe universally recommended protective precautionary measures, including the practice of high personal hygiene,” he said in a statement.

Other Covid-19 security measures include a one-piece baggage allowance (instead of the usual two), not to exceed 7kg, and early arrival at the airport, at least three hours before departure.

AirAsia Group (Airlines) President Bo Lingam said the airline has conducted a comprehensive review of guest handling procedures both on the ground and on board in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We have been working closely with airport authorities to ensure that all relevant precautionary measures are in place to ensure a safe, pleasant and comfortable journey for all,” he said in a statement.

Bo added that AirAsia will adhere to the guidance of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to ensure “the highest standards of compliance and compliance.”

The resumption of services will initially be for selected key domestic routes, which will gradually increase to include international destinations around the network, once the situation improves and governments lift borders and travel restrictions.

AirAsia was also in the news recently when reports emerged that the carrier introduced new personal protective equipment (PPE) for its cabin crew.

When contacted, an AirAsia spokesperson said the matter is still being reviewed.

“AirAsia Philippines initiated a design test for custom PPE. It was first used on a recent recovery flight and an additional design evaluation is underway.

“The custom PPE is still under review,” the spokesperson said.
