KUCHING (Dec 11): Parti Rakyat Sarawak Chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar, Dr. James Masing, today told young aspiring Dayak politicians that their youth does not replace their age and experience in the administration of the state.
“It is good to know that young Dayak Turks have high hopes of what they can and want to achieve for their communities. That is a good start. But they haven’t been through the ‘battlefields’ of politics like I and some Dayaks YB veterans have, “he said after being urged to retire.
Masing, who is a deputy chief minister, said in a statement that the youth lacked the experience and skills to balance the urges and pulls of ruling a multiracial state like Sarawak.
Striking the right balance is easier said than done. Political bravado and excitement are not good enough to get the job done, ”he said.
Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru (PBDSB) Chairman Bobby William had told Masing to stand down and let others take over as he said earlier this week that the fight for a Dayak-centered government was ” a lost cause. “
Masing pointed out today that to be successful stewards of the state, all elected representatives require the help of all stakeholders in the country, and therefore age and political experience are invaluable assets in governing Sarawak.
“Youth can offer vitality, but age and experience provide wisdom to manage and guide this nation to advance in peace.
So please don’t mistake youth as a good and only substitute for political experience, ”he said.
Masing had said Wednesday that many young Dayaks believed their leaders had not fought for their community, not realizing that PBDSB’s predecessor, Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak, had tried to bring the community together between 1987 and 1994.
He said that he was now too old to fight for a lost cause and that the Dayak should work together with other communities for the benefit of all Sarawakians.
