UM says the head teacher has been punished under the rules of the integrity code after accusations of sexual harassment.

PETALING JAYA: Police say the decision to drop a sexual harassment case involving a professor from the Malaya University was made by the Attorney General’s Office.

Brickfields Police Chief Zairulnizam Mohd Zainuddin said it was the deputy prosecutor’s decision not to press charges.

“We received a report on July 15 from a 23-year-old student who alleged that she was sexually harassed by a university professor.

“We opened an investigation into the case under Section 354 of the Penal Code before delivering the investigative documents to the DPP on August 13,” he said in a statement today.

“After studying the statements given in the case, the DPP decided that there were no charges against the suspect, taking into account the fact that Universiti Malaya had taken internal action against the suspect,” Zairulnizam said.

The student had submitted the report to the police two weeks after filing a complaint with the university on July 1.

“The victim was informed as soon as we received the decision and orders from the Attorney General’s Office,” Zairulnizam said, adding that the police had never covered up any cases.

Last month, the third-year student was reported to have filed a police report after feeling dissatisfied with the response she had received from the Integrity Unit at Universiti Malaya.

She claimed that she was sexually harassed by a head teacher in her office on June 3 of last year.

Subsequently, the rector of the university issued a statement in which he said that the investigations were carried out as soon as the complaint was received, and that the perpetrator had been punished according to the rules of the integrity code.
