A downpour caused flooding of up to 3 meters in parts of Kuala Lumpur yesterday afternoon.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Federal Territories is looking for a long-term solution to avoid flash floods similar to those that struck parts of the capital yesterday afternoon.

His minister, Annuar Musa, said he will request a report from the Department of Drainage and Irrigation (DID) and the Kuala Lumpur City Council (DBKL) on the effectiveness of the irrigation and flood mitigation system.

He said the ministry will consider whether the flood mitigation system and smart tunnel, which cost billions to build, are working well.

He did not rule out the possibility that the flash floods were caused by development projects in various parts of the city.

“I want to see if the large flow of water is related to the areas that are being developed. A study is needed to allow DBKL to implement a long-term plan, ”he said in a live feed on Facebook during a visit to an evacuation center last night.

Heavy rains at 1.30 pm caused flash floods in Lebuh Ampang, Jalan Raja Alang (Kampung Baru), Lorong Air Leleh (Setapak), Jalan Gurney and Jalan San Ah Wing (Semarak). The floodwaters rose up to 3 m in some areas.

Fifteen people trapped by the floods in Jalan Gurney and Kampung Periuk were rescued by firefighters.

Annuar described the volume of rainfall as “more than usual”.
