ADUN SPEAKS | From the youngest to the highest ranking member, I have been in the Selangor state legislature for 25 years. I was elected in the Bukit Gasing constituency in 1995 and switched to represent Bandar Klang in 1999.
The name of the constituency was later changed to Sungai Pinang and then to the current Bandar Baru Klang, and I have continuously represented the people in the state assembly for a period of a quarter of a century from today.
Going through the ups and downs of the DAP, from its lowest ebb to the peak, I was the only elected representative of the DAP in the Selangor state assembly in 1999 and now we have 16, the highest number in the history of the DAP.
I had been the leader of the opposition in the state assembly, the president and now a member of the state executive council, experiencing 12 years as a member of the opposition and now my thirteenth year in government, setting an unprecedented record for a full cycle of an elected representative in the Selangor legislature in three different positions.
12 years in opposition
During my tenure as a member of the opposition, I exposed the incident in which the then Speaker of the House, in violation of a constitutional restriction, still held the presidency of a cooperative during his term. In 1997, I filed a motion of censure against Menteri Besar that led to her resignation announced on the first day of the state assembly meeting.
I exposed the scandal of the then Menteri Besar who approved RM5 million to renew his official residence in the same year and then spent another RM77,000 for his hotel accommodation during the renovation the following year …
