GEORGE TOWN: Prominent activist and historian Khoo Salma Nasution has reminded the Penang government that they wanted ferries to be replaced by catamarans in their Penang Transportation Master Plan (PTMP).

“Penang’s leadership these days seem to suffer from ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) as the PTMP indicated that iconic ferries should be replaced by catamarans.

“They seem to have forgotten that they proposed to replace ferries with catamarans,” Khoo Salma said in her Facebook post on Wednesday (December 30).

“It says so in the PTMP, or they may not have read the document themselves.

“The introduction of efficient modern boats along with the expansion of water transport is one of the things I agree on in principle, not forgetting that the iconic Penang heritage ferries should be preserved and used for recreational voyages across the canal.” .

Coinciding with this, DAP Senator Lim Hui Ying said in Dewan Negara that two of the old ferries should be kept in service “not as public transport but as tourism products.”

In a later statement, he said that no one is opposed to catamarans, but that the ferry service should be maintained even if it has a lower frequency.

DAP Secretary General and former Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng claimed that the previous Pakatan Harapan government had proposed that the catamarans be operated in parallel with the ferries.

The ferries will be temporarily replaced by passenger speedboats from January 1, while one will be kept to carry two-wheelers until the remodeling of the terminals is completed.

The service will be provided by water buses for passengers and a transporter for two-wheelers once the remodeling is completed.
