PUTRAJAYA: Measures will be taken against family members of Malaysians with permanent resident status (PR) or long-term social visit pass who did not pay for accommodation costs when they were subjected to mandatory quarantine, according to the Chief Minister (Cluster of Security) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
He said that the Special Cabinet Committee on the Movement Control Order (MCO), at its meeting today, gave permission to the Immigration Department to revoke the special status granted to these members of the Malaysian family.
Ismail Sabri, who is also Defense Minister, said the Chambers of the Attorney General will also investigate the matter and take legal action to recover their costs.
“As I have announced about the mandatory quarantine policy … spouses, wives or children (from Malaysia) with public relations status and long-term social visit pass holders who followed their husbands or wives back (from abroad during the MCO) you have to bear the costs of the hotel (quarantine center).
“However, some refused to pay when they left the hotels,” he said at a news conference on the MCO today.
He said that the Immigration Department was empowered to withdraw the facilities granted to these people.
“For example, they may have been allowed to renew their pass for periods of two to three years previously, but after this they may need to renew it every three to four months,” he added.
Meanwhile, he said that married couples who stay separate will be allowed to cross state boundaries to meet once a week during the Conditional MCO (CMCO), which will end on June 9.
He said those who wish to take interstate trips to join their families should report to the nearest police station.
Ismail Sabri also said that the government decided to allow equestrian centers to resume operations, but only for the purpose of ensuring the welfare of the animals.
“This permit is only to guarantee the welfare of the horses, even to feed them and clean the paddocks,” he added. – Bernama
