PETALING JAYA: National footballer Syafiq Ahmad was involved in an accident early this morning on the North-South highway, which claimed the lives of his 22-day-old son and mother-in-law and left his wife in critical condition.
Astro Awani reported that no other vehicle was believed to be involved in the accident and that the car had skidded before passing over the divider.
Syafiq is believed to have been traveling back to his Sungei Ara hometown, Bayan Lepas, when the accident occurred near Sungei Bakap.
With him were his wife Nur Amalina Nur Ain, 25, his 2-year-old daughter Aaira Nur Saffiyya, his 22-day-old son, his mother-in-law, Zainab Wahab, 45, and his maid, Titik Sukamti, in her 30s.
His maid was also killed in the accident, while he and his daughter suffered minor injuries.
According to Awani, the Penang Fire and Rescue Department had been notified of the accident around 5.36pm and arrived at the scene less than 10 minutes later.
A department spokesman said they found the black Toyota Vellfire badly wrecked with six victims, three of whom were trapped in the vehicle.
Syafiq is a forward with Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) and the Harimau Malaya team.
In a message on the official Facebook page of JDT Southern Tigers, the crown prince of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, owner of the club, expressed his sympathy for the player.
“I would like to express my deepest condolences to Syafiq Ahmad on the passing of his family members. We are always with you, Syafiq. Rest in peace. Al-Fatihah.
“I beg the public to refrain from sharing related photos and videos as a token of respect for the sensitivity and feelings of Syafiq and his family.”
