Passengers who arrived yesterday from Kuala Lumpur and Miri were screened at Miri airport before being sent to their respective hotels for a mandatory 14-day quarantine.

KUCHING (Oct 14): Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah plans to relax the entry requirements for visitors from Peninsular Malaysia to Sarawak, in light of isolated Covid-19 cases there.

He plans to raise the matter in Cabinet tomorrow.

“We have to be selective. For Sabah, we closed the door as the number of cases is out of control with hundreds of cases, but in Peninsular Malaysia the increase in cases is mainly in prisons and isolated cases and it should be fine to open our borders, including airports ”. he said at a press conference about the Sarawak Youth Day celebration in his office today.

Currently, those entering the state from outside of Sarawak are required to undergo a mandatory 14-day quarantine, while those from Sabah cannot enter, from October 4-18.

This was announced by the chairman of the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, on October 1.

He was asked if guests from Peninsular Malaysia for the Sarawak Youth Day celebration in Samarahan on November 7 would need to self-quarantine in light of the pandemic.

“It is difficult for me to answer because the management can change depending on the current situation. We (SDMC) are even considering extending the mandatory 14-day quarantine beyond October 18.

However, he said his ministry does not want entry to the state to be too tightly controlled.

“But for my part, we want to see relaxation in this, as the tourism and hospitality industry is making a lot of noise about it as it affects them.”

He added that in Sarawak, the pandemic is well controlled and Sarawak serves as a model for other states.

Present were the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Snowdan Lawan, and the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Nancy Jolhi.
