“We have organized numerous international conferences on the digital economy as platforms for the state to revolutionize its way of doing business and promote the digital economy,” he said, adding that experts from around the world were invited to be part of the panel of speakers of these conferences.
Abang Johari emphasized that the state must seek to access larger markets beyond its borders because the state has only a population of 2.8 million spread over its huge landmass.
Other initiatives introduced by the state government included the creation of the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA), the introduction of the state’s own Sarawak Pay mobile payments application, and an allocation of RM1 billion to improve digital infrastructure in the state, such as the construction of telecommunications towers.
“We used our own funds to upgrade existing infrastructure in the state because there were delays in obtaining funding from the federal government at the time and we were hopeful that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission would provide us with a matching grant later on.” . He also said that Sarawak Pay had been recognized by Singapore Business Review as a digital application that was widely used during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Prime Minister was accompanied during the visit to the theme park by the Minister of Tourism, Art and Culture, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who said that the virtual reality park could serve as the last tourism product to be offered to the people.
“I see that this place is located near the center of the city and I think it has the potential to be included in one of our tourist packages to serve national tourists. I was also quite impressed with the offerings in the park, ”added Abdul Karim.
Four Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) were signed during the launch ceremony, one between Serba Dinamik Group, Sarawak Economic Development Corporation and Center of Technical Excellence, another between Serba Dinamik Group and SESA, one between Serba Dinamik IT Solutions and State Family and Women Department and the last one was between StartUp Borneo Malaysia and Women Rise Malaysia.
Francisca Luhong James, newly crowned Miss Universe Malaysia 2020, also made a special virtual appearance for her Women Rise Malaysia movement and congratulated the state on its digital initiatives.
During the launch ceremony, Serba Dinamik also presented ‘D-Tamu’ as a marketplace for ‘digital tamu’.
