Abandoned girl found alive in bag in Penang Flats

GEORGE TOWN: A girl weighing about 3.2 kg was found abandoned in a block of flats in Paya Terubong, Yesterday Itam here.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong said police received a report about a baby that was found inside a bag around 12:40 pm on Sunday (November 1).

“The baby’s name, age and race are unknown,” he said, adding that the baby was found in the area where the mailboxes are located.

“A 29-year-old man, who lives in a nearby block, found the baby inside a backpack wrapped in black plastic and placed in mailboxes.

“The baby was still alive and wrapped in a white towel. Her umbilical cord was already cut and there were no documents in the bag,” he said.

Later medical officers found no injuries to the baby and took her to Penang Hospital for further monitoring.

ACP Soffian said that the area where the baby was abandoned is not covered by CCTV and there is no security guard.

No other eyewitnesses have come forward yet.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for neglect of children.
