As you can see, the Amazfit Neo has a retro design reminiscent of Casio digital watches, while also including a range of fitness features and smart functionality. You’re looking at a square screen and the controls are limited to four physical buttons, there’s no touchscreen here. Instead, you’ll have a monochrome STN display showing the time (of course) and steps through the Always-on feature.
Amazfit promises that the 1.2 ″ display will be “easy to read” in bright light, and there is also a backlight for use at night. It’s worth noting that most smartwatches in 2020 use OLED displays, so you may have to get used to a rather dated-looking screen. That said, this contributes to some seriously impressive battery figures: 28 days of battery life for regular use on a single charge, with a promised 37 days in power saving mode.
The watch also uses a plastic body and a PUR strap, contributing to a weight of just 32g. “Smart” features like notifications from supported apps are supported, while there’s also a find my phone feature to … find your phone when you’ve lost it. Amazfit has also equipped the Neo with a BioTracker PPG optical sensor that supports 24/7 heart rate tracking, while there is a PAI Health Assessment System that rates your physical health through of heart rate data.
Only There are three sports modes available: running, walking and cycling, although there is a water resistance of 5ATM. However, it is worth noting that GPS is not available on the Neo, which means that any location tracking will need to be done via a paired smartphone. This consequently means that the Amazfit Neo will not be suitable as a standalone exercise buddy, not if you plan to keep track of your runs or cycling sessions.
From first impressions, the Amazfit seems like an interesting device, at a particularly attractive price. However, options like the Mi Smart Band 5 are similarly priced and offer similar functionality, with color displays. Still, if you’re a fan of classic Casio watches, this might be a wearable device worth considering.
