PETALING JAYA: It was a sight to behold when albiceleste fever hit a shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur, which was packed with people dressed in the blue and white striped jerseys of the Argentine soccer team, hoping to see Diego Maradona.
This happened during the launch of the Boby & Maradona Gold Diamond Jewelery store on May 30, 2015, a trading venture between Argentine soccer legend and Indian jewelery magnate Boby Chemmanur.
This was a rare opportunity for Malaysian soccer fans to see the legend in person.
The store opening, the first of its kind in Southeast Asia, was also attended by Bollywood star Karisma Kapoor.
During the event, Maradona also presented a mock RM70,000 check from the jeweler to The Star’s Newspaper-in-Education (NiE) program, an educational event to help students improve their English proficiency.
The event began with Kapoor holding the floor, but the mood changed significantly when Maradona arrived.
The crowd went wild as he showed off his soccer skills on stage with fans clamoring for a glimpse of the action; Maradona was obviously well liked by Malaysians.
Maradona’s death from a heart attack on Wednesday (November 25), at age 60, was mourned by soccer fans around the world.
His exploits on the field left an indelible mark on the history of Argentine sport, in particular, he won the FIFA World Cup in 1986.
Maradona’s life story ranged from poverty to wealth: a slum boy who dazzled everyone on the field, rose through the ranks, and is now considered one of the greatest soccer players of all time, if not the larger.
As Maradona is no longer with us, the moment he visited Malaysia is unforgettable.
