Getting to Kickstarter this week is an instrument that has been in the works for almost six years and is already nearing its funding goal after just a few days. Striso Board is an expressive MPE instrument / controller that not only allows you to be more creative with your performances, but also helps you understand musical structures.
The most obvious thing about the Striso badge is the sea of 61 silicone buttons. All of these are sensitive to finger pressure and subtle movements from left to right and front to back to make variations in amplitude, pitch and timbre. Each button is built with a horizontal crest, with “exactly the right amount of haptic feedback,” according to the creators. For even more expression, accents and sound effects can be added by shaking and moving the entire Striso Board.
Striso’s design is isomorphic, which means that each musical interval, chord, and scale has the same shape, regardless of the key. All intervals have their own shape, regardless of the root note. The notes in the same key are also close to each other, making it difficult to hit those dissonant notes. The axes of the design place tone on one axis and progression of fifths on the other, making it easy to navigate tone and clef.
“The last interesting property,” Striso says, “is that the design is invariant. Because the treble and flat notes are separated, it is possible to fine-tune them differently and play, for example, in tunings without a wolf interval.”
As of this writing, the Striso Board had pledged £ 10,353, almost half of its target of £ 21,874. The project still has some time, the closing date is May 31, 2020.
