PETALING JAYA: The Ministry of Health has identified a new group, called “Kluster Laut”, which involves undocumented immigrants in a temporary detention center in Kunak, Sabah.
Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the group’s index case, Case 9,859, is a detainee at the Tawau Temporary Detention Center.
He was sent back to Zamboanga, Philippines, on August 27.
“However, on September 5, he entered Sabah from Zamboanga via a ‘rat lane’ (smuggling route) to visit his wife.
“The wife (case 9,860) tested positive for Covid-19 on September 8 during an examination at the Tawau Hospital. She had been referred from the Kunak Hospital after suffering complications during delivery. “
She first experienced symptoms on September 6.
From active case detection and close contact assessments, two more positive cases were traced: the neighbor and a child.
As of September 12, 49 people from the group were examined. All involved Filipino citizens.
Four were positive, 14 were negative, and 31 people are still waiting for the results.
