A dangerous extremist? Dr. M criticizes the website for allegedly misrepresenting his views

PETALING JAYA: Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has criticized a website that named him among the 20 most dangerous extremists in the world for his views on the knife violence that killed a teacher in France last year.

The former prime minister said he was also curious who is behind the website that he claims to be run by “a renowned group of former world leaders and diplomats.”

Dr. Mahathir, who is the founder of Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang), which has yet to be registered, also wondered why the outgoing US President Donald Trump was not on the list.

Dr. Mahathir responded to being named last week on a list posted by the US-based Project Against Extremism website.

“Based on the storming of the Capitol by his supporters, attributed in large part to his incitement, Trump should be labeled (an) extremist.

“But the website has not described him as a terrorist even though Mark Zuckerberg has banned Trump from Facebook,” he said in a Facebook post on Monday (January 11).

Dr. Mahathir said the website also regurgitated and allegedly misrepresented his opinion on the incident to imply that he was defending terrorism at his post in October.

He defended his post by saying that he was simply emphasizing that Muslims are not vindictive.

He said that among his views cited by the website was that of French President Emmanuel Macron, who claimed that Islam promotes terrorism.

“This is totally wrong. Islam forbids killing. The murder of a single person, Muslim or not, is compared to the murder of all mankind.”

“If Muslims kill, it is not because of the teachings of Islam,” he said.

Dr. Mahathir said the website easily mentions others as extremists, but was not prepared to identify those who meet its criteria.

He listed those who should also be on the list as those who supported Zionist state terrorism, those who were behind the Deir Yassin massacre in 1948, the displacement of Palestinians, and the murder of those who refused.

“There are also many other, hawkish leaders who supported the so-called war on terror and planned the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan, even fabricating lies about the existence of weapons of mass destruction to justify the invasion,” he said.
