Now, 2 years later, humanity is facing another viral pandemic, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), with coronavirus 2 of severe acute respiratory syndrome as the causative agent. The COVID-19 pandemic is profoundly challenging health systems, national economies, global health governance structures, and the many advances we have made in human health and global solidarity.

And it’s already the deadliest new pandemic since the onset of AIDS nearly 40 years ago. To address the many interactions of this pandemic with HIV and populations affected by HIV disproportionately, the IAS announced on April 16, 2020, an expanded conference program to include COVID-19 and HIV interactions in its call for last minute summaries. The IAS is well aware of how many of our members worldwide participate in the COVID-19 response across the spectrum of science, clinical care, prevention and policy. In fact, in many countries, some of the leaders in responses to COVID-19 have a history of HIV.
