BATU PAHAT (Bernama): A hike in the price of onions from India cannot be avoided due to reduced imports caused by monsoons and floods in the republic, says the Ministry of Internal Trade and Consumer Affairs.

His Deputy Minister, Datuk Rosol Wahid, said that consumers can seek alternatives by opting for onions from various other countries such as Thailand, Pakistan, China, the Netherlands, Myanmar and Indonesia.

At present, he said that only the price of onions from India rose dramatically, but supplies of onions from other countries were adequate and offered at the same prices as before.

“However, I find that local consumers prefer onions from India compared to those imported from other countries,” he told a press conference after visiting the Teo Seng Capital Berhad egg factory in Yong Peng, near here. on Sunday (November 21). .

Also present were the Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry (Consumer Empowerment) Mohamed Zahari Razali and the Executive Director of Leong Hup International Berhad Group, Tan Sri Lau Tuang Nguang.

Rosol said consumers using Indian onions should be patient and turn to unions in other countries first.

“The Ministry will continue to seek and obtain alternative sources of onion from other countries to satisfy the demand of the country’s consumers,” he said.

Meanwhile, the ministry assured Malaysians that the food supply was adequate and that wholesalers were allowed to store 30% more than the normal quota set by the ministry during the monsoon season that has just started.

“Their goal is to ensure that people do not run out of food during the monsoon season and recovery and conditional OLS in various states,” he added. – Bernama
