According to the New York Times, Trump asked his advisers last week to explore other ways to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities. However, the same report claims that senior White House officials managed to dissuade Trump, explaining that such actions could cause current tensions to flare.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Vice President Mike Pence were among the advisers who opposed Trump’s suggestion.
The new outlet wrote: “A series of high-level advisers dissuaded the president from going ahead with a military attack.”
He added: “Any attack, be it missile or cyber, would almost certainly target Natanz, where the International Atomic Energy Agency reported Wednesday that Iran’s uranium reserves were now 12 times greater than allowed by the nuclear deal. that Trump left in 2018.
“The agency also noted that Iran had not allowed it access to another suspicious site where there was evidence of past nuclear activity.”
The alarming report comes just a week after Pompeo launched an attack on Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, accusing him of stealing “hundreds of millions of dollars from his people.”
He lashed out after Khamenei said the US elections showed “the ugly face of liberal democracy.”
Pompeo tweeted: “Khamenei, you have personally stolen hundreds of millions of dollars from your people.
“Your elections are a joke, with hundreds of candidates disqualified from even running.
“We welcome the day when the Iranian people get their wish, and you know what it is. That’s it.”
Tensions between the two countries had been escalating for some time with an exchange between Pompeo and Khamenei that broke out on US election day.
The war of words saw Pompeo label Iran a pariah state that still “holds innocent American citizens today.”
He tweeted: “41 years ago, the Iranian regime took 52 American diplomats hostage for 444 days. We remember their sacrifice.
“The regime is still holding innocent American citizens today. The Iranian regime must stop this grotesque hostage campaign and immediately release Morad Tahbaz and the Namazis.”
Mr Khamenei responded to the claims hours later, suggesting that the US elections were a “show”.
He tweeted: “What a sight! One says this is the most fraudulent election in American history.” Who says that? The president who is currently in office.
“His rival says that Trump intends to rig the elections! This is the American election and democracy.”
