5 new Covid-19 clusters involving Sabah, KL, Penang, Kelantan, Terengganu

Of the 162 active clusters in the country, 72 involved the workplace, including four of the current new clusters.

PETALING JAYA: The Ministry of Health has detected five new Covid-19 clusters in the country during the last 24 hours.

Chief Health Officer Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said it is the Avenue and Kejora groups in Sabah, the Kasah group in Kuala Lumpur, the Summer group in Penang, and the Mengketil group involving Kelantan and Terengganu.

The Avenue cluster was detected in Penampang, Sabah. The index case was a construction site supervisor who tested positive on November 8.

Close contact examinations found another 109 infected people. A total of 246 people have been tested, 136 of whom tested negative.

Kejora’s group, located in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, began when an individual tested positive after showing symptoms on November 9.

Through close contact examinations, another eight positive cases were detected. So far, 71 people have been tested, and 62 have been negative.

Kasah’s group originated in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur. The cluster started after 19 people tested positive for Covid-19 through an assessment at a security company on November 17.

As of noon, 70 people have been tested, and 51 are still awaiting test results.

Meanwhile, the index case for the Summer group in Timur Laut, Penang, tested positive through a screening test after showing symptoms on November 10. After close contact screening tests, another 10 positive cases were detected.

A total of 53 people have been tested so far, 38 of whom have tested negative and four awaiting test results.

The Mengketil group includes Kota Bharu, Machang, and Tanah Merah in Kelantan, as well as Besut in Terengganu. The index case tested positive for Covid-19 on November 13, and close contact tests found 23 more infections.

So far, 210 people have been examined. One hundred and sixty-four of them tested negative and 22 are waiting for the test results.

Regarding the existing groups, Noor Hisham said that those with a high number of infections were the Damanlela Construction Site group in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur with 206 new cases, the Teratai group in Selangor (142) and the Sandakan prison group in Sabah (122).

It also announced that five conglomerates were terminated after no new cases were detected after 28 days.

They are Tasik’s group involving Selangor and Sarawak; Bangau-Bangau and Kau Sing Clusters in Sabah; Cluster of olive trees involving Selangor and Sabah; and Buang Sayang’s group that includes Kuala Lumpur, Sabah and Negeri Sembilan.

Noor Hisham also said that of the 162 groups active in the country, 72 involved the workplace, including four of the current new groups. He added that the increase in Covid-19 cases in the Klang Valley was due to these groups of workplaces.

“There are some factors that have contributed to the spread of infectious disease among workers, such as their bedrooms, personal hygiene and the cleanliness of their homes and workplace.”

Following the rise in infections involving foreign workers, he urged all employers to educate their workers on personal hygiene and provide them with housing that ensures physical distancing between workers.
