PS4 players are cautioned not to insert PS5 game discs into their consoles

Warning for all PlayStation players: It is unwise to put a PlayStation 5 disc in a PlayStation 4, as there is a strong possibility that it will jam.

An experiment to see if a PlayStaion 5 the game disc can be read by Playstation 4 it has not ended well. As a result, players with both systems are cautioned not to attempt this at home, as it will likely end the same way or potentially worse.

The backward compatibility capabilities of the PlayStation 5 have been a major selling point for Sony’s newest console. Many older PlayStation 4 games can be played on the next-gen console with some reception load time and graphical improvements thanks to better hardware. However, all the talk about backward compatibility has created a bit of confusion when it comes to newer games to be released on both generations of consoles. On the surface, a PS4 version of a new release like Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla it’s the same as a PS5 version, but that’s not the case from a technical perspective.

Power supply received some PlayStation 5 games before a console, as the PS5 does not come out until November 19 in Europe (where Power supply It is based). In an experiment to test updates between console generations, a PS5 copy of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales it was inserted into a PlayStation 4. The hope was that Sony’s next-generation console could read the disc and grant access to the PS4 version of the game. That, however, did not work. The Miles Morales disc got stuck in the PlayStation 4 as the system kept trying to read it and it crashed. As a result, the eject button did not work properly and the disc was briefly trapped.

Fortunately, the PS4 has a manual eject screw at the bottom of the console, which can be used to eject discs or small discs (or disc-shaped objects) lodged in the disc drive. However, having to use it is never a preferable option, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if PS5 discs got stuck in an infinite read loop inside a PS4 like Power supply‘s could easily result in a damaged disc.

At first glance, this experiment may seem strange to try in the first place, as it is quite well known that games made for newer consoles do not work on older ones, even on the same console lineup. However, with all the buzz surrounding the PS5’s ability to play PS4 games, as well as its ability to use save files from the previous generation, the experiment seems a bit logical. Ultimately, the game will be the same no matter which generation the player chooses to experience it in. However, old gaming laws still apply to physical copies and must be strictly followed to avoid damage to both discs and systems. To echo PSU sentiments: it is not wise to put your physique Playstation 5 discs on your PlayStation 4, even if the game has a PS4 version.
