The mayor of Mohamed Salah’s hometown has called claims that the Liverpool star violated social distancing guidelines as “false.”

On Friday, the Egyptian was confirmed to have returned a second positive test for Covid-19, meaning that he will now be forced to self-isolate for 10 days.

That will see him miss the next two matches for his country, while his club sweats when he’s available again.

A shared statement by the FA of Egypt Read: “Liverpool and Egyptian national team star Mohamed Salah has undergone a second test and the results have confirmed that Salah tested positive for Covid 19.

The Egyptian FA has confirmed that Mohamed Salah has returned a second positive coronavirus test

“All necessary medical precautions have been taken according to the world medical protocol and under the supervision of Dr. Mohamed Sultan, Head of the EFA Medical Committee, as well as Dr. Mohamed Abou El Ela, Egyptian National Team physician.

“Although the first swab gave a positive result, the Egyptian FA has decided to carry out a second test to confirm the result.

“Salah is in high spirits and shows no symptoms of the virus. He has been isolated and the national team doctor is in contact with Dr. Jim Moxon, Liverpool FC’s chief medical staff, regarding this matter.”

Hours before news of his positive tests was reported, images surfaced of Salah celebrating his brother Nasr’s wedding in Cairo.

He was photographed and filmed without a face mask or social distancing, with images posted on social media showing him dancing with other guests.

Despite those images, however, the mayor of Nagrig, which is about 80 miles from the wedding, has said that suggestions that he violated protocols were incorrect.

“Everything that has been said is false, it makes no sense to hug someone five times in the same wedding,” Shtayyeh told Goal.

“Also Salah was extremely cautious during the hour-long wedding, he never removed his mask except to take pictures.

“Salah is fine now, he doesn’t show any symptoms, I spoke with his father and uncle.

“Trezeguet was the only [other Egypt] player who came to the wedding with Salah, was also extremely cautious.

Salah joins Joe Gomez on Jurgen Klopp’s absentee list after the central defender sustained a knee injury while with England

In September, Egypt allowed weddings to be held in open-air venues, with a maximum limit of 300 guests.

Salah’s period of self-isolation means that he is guaranteed to miss Liverpool’s clash with Leicester City on November 22, while the club seeks clarification on when he will be allowed to return to Mersyside.

It’s the latest in a cruel streak of injury setbacks for the champions. Along with his top scorer, Klopp is faced with the fact that three of his four starting defenses are ready for an extended period on the sidelines.

Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold were already suffering from injuries, with the former being expected to be out for most of the season.

But on Thursday, it was confirmed that Joe Gomez had undergone surgery for a knee tendon injury he sustained while on international duty. While the club has yet to offer a full forecast, they have suggested that the 23-year-old will miss a “significant chunk” of the remaining season.
