PETALING JAYA: A group of students based at Universiti Malaya has apologized to Yang di-Pertuan Agong for a statement that questions their powers in national affairs.
The University Malaya New Youth Association (Umany) said that after consulting with constitutional experts, it also withdrew its statement dated October 30 from its English and Chinese Facebook accounts.
“We affirm our adherence to the constitutional monarchy system in Malaysia and we respect the role of Yang di-Pertuan Agong in the Constitution. We would like to apologize to the King and the public for our lack of full understanding of the Constitution, ”Umany said in a statement on Thursday (November 12).
The group added that the statement was for academic discussion purposes and was never intended to be malicious or seditious.
“As the Sedition Law and the Communications and Multimedia Law are in fact archaic and draconian laws that trample on freedom of expression. We call on the police to stop all investigations and possible prosecutions under these laws, and urge the government to repeal the draconian laws immediately to safeguard the freedom of expression of all citizens, ”the group said.
Umany also expressed his gratitude to all parties who had expressed their support and solidarity with them, adding that they will continue to advocate and defend democracy and freedom together with civil society for a better Malaysia.
Several Umany members were investigated under the Sedition Law and the Communications and Multimedia Law for a Facebook post titled “Yang di-Pertuan Agong should not intervene in national affairs.”
