Japanese Mask Maker Leaves Trump, Hugs Biden, East Asia News & Top Stories

TOKYO (REUTERS) – For a mask producer in Japan, the transition from US President Donald Trump to Mr. Joe Biden has been smooth, as he shifts production to Democratic President-elect masks.

Ogawa Studios, a small producer in Saitama, north of Tokyo, began making Biden rubber masks earlier this year, but since its election victory last week, it has increased production.

In October alone, 1,000 Biden masks were sold for 2,400 yen (S $ 31) each, and the company has set a goal of producing another 25,000 by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, Trump’s masks, which cost the same, have been relegated to the bottom of the company’s product line.

Ogawa Studio manager Koki Takahashi said it was much easier to produce a cartoon of Trump, whose mask appears to be screaming, than Biden’s.

Biden’s cartoon is much more understated, with a friendly smile.

“We didn’t have any background information on Biden, so it was difficult to understand his character,” Takahashi said.

“But we pay special attention to the corner of his eyes and his mouth to do it.”

The real-life Biden continues to lay the groundwork for his administration, in the context of a resurgence of Covid-19 cases in the US, while Trump refuses to accept the election outcome.
